Henderson High School’s choir is a program open to all HHS students for receiving of fine arts curriculum credit.

The primary goal of the course is to develop the musicality of each enrolled individual. Contained within this goal are character development, teamwork, loyalty and responsibility. Consequently, choir members are expected to emerge as leaders and role models in our school and community.

Henderson High School offers choir courses on both the varsity and non-varsity level. Placement of individuals into either varsity or non-varsity choir is determined by the choral director.

Additionally, enriched study courses in applied vocal music are offered to those choir students who wish to study and compete in vocal music at an advanced level. These courses required primary enrollment in a choir class and are scheduled by director approval only.

Students enrolled in choir have the opportunity to compete both individually and as a group. Individual competitions are optional, but encouraged. Group competitions are not optional.

Individual competitions are both TMEA (TX Music Educators Association) contests and UIL (University Interscholastic League) contests. Group contests are sponsored by the UIL.

TMEA competitions are for region, area and all-state choir selections. UIL Solo & Ensemble contests are designed for individual musical growth and literature exposure. The UIL further sponsors Concert & Sight-reading Contest for on both varsity and non-varsity levels.

All competitions are structured under extra-curricular guidelines. Consequently, choir students must be eligible for competition under Texas “No Pass/No Play” rules.

All HHS choirs perform a minimum of two public concerts a year; one at Christmas and one in the spring. These concerts are required performances for all members regardless of eligibility status.
