Change a kid's life, become a mentor today! The most positive impact you can have on a child is building a sincere relationship with him or her. It doesn't take long and you don't have to be an expert at anything. All you need is a heart for kids and a commitment to spend time with them. There are volunteer mentoring opportunities on every campus at HISD and applying is easy. Visit HendersonISD.org/mentors for all the details!

HMS P.E. classes participated in the Say What movement. Texas youth named the movement Say What! - Students, Adults, and Youth Working Hard Against Tobacco! Students rotated through different stations to learn the dangers of vaping and tobacco use. The stations involved trivia, guessing the number of jellybeans (which represented the number of chemicals in a vape), a photo booth opportunity, and a coloring station. The event was sponsored by the HMS student council.

Have you attend an HMS sporting event, concert, or other activity? Did you snap some great pictures you would like to share? Use our public Dropbox! There is a "photo Dropbox" button on the HMS home page and the HMS Facebook page. You can share photos from a computer or a mobile device via the link. No one will be able to view photos in the Dropbox except the manager of the box. The photos will be included with an end of the year slide show during our awards ceremony. Please only include photos of students participating in HMS activities.

6th grade girls P.E. classes are creating workout dances. Each group has a captain to lead them and their dance must include 4 different fitness moves. Examples of some of the fitness moves are jumping jacks, lunges, and high knees. The girls also get to sprinkle in favorite dance moves and some even brought props. If you look closely at the pictures, you can see Coach Bennett throwing her best moves in as well.

While rain is causing some flooding and power outages in portions of Rusk County, all HISD campuses are open. We know some staff and students live in or must drive through the areas impacted by last night’s storms and encourage all to be cautious when traveling this morning.

HISD is closely monitoring the developing weather across our area. We currently do not anticipate any major impact for our schools. Should the situation change, we will notify parents and staff. Please stay safe this evening.

WEATHER CLOSURE: All campuses of HISD will be closed Friday (Feb. 4th) due to the threat of icy road conditions early tomorrow morning. Classes will resume on Monday (Feb 7th). The closure will impact many of our athletic and extracurricular activities scheduled this weekend. Please watch for information directly from your students’ activity sponsors (coaches, bands directors, teachers, etc.) through Remind. We will try to post all schedule updates at https://HendersonISD.org/weather as well. By 12:30 p.m, Thursday, temperatures had already dropped below freezing in a few portions of the district and we expect that to continue overnight. While temperatures may climb above freezing tomorrow afternoon, we do not yet know if it will be enough to allow for safe travel Friday afternoon or evening. We are in contact with forecasters and local emergency management authorities to best assess the current situation. HISD’s priority remains keeping our students and staff safe and will cancel or postpone activities if travel is potentially dangerous. Watch our website (HendersonISD.org/weather) for updates. Please stay safe and warm during this wintery weather.
