Meeks and Bowman

HENDERSON, Texas – Henderson ISD has named Ricky Meeks as its new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, bringing a wealth of experience and a vision centered on student excellence, community engagement, and a unified athletic program.

Meeks, who has served as the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Center ISD and Alto ISD, has a proven track record of building successful programs. His emphasis on program-wide development extends beyond football, fostering a culture of excellence across all boy and girls sports.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Meeks back to Henderson ISD,” said Superintendent Brian Bowman. “His experience, leadership, and commitment to student development make him an excellent fit for this role. He understands the important connection between athletics and academics, and we believe he will have a tremendous impact on our students and community.”

A former quarterback at Northwestern State University, Meeks began his coaching career at Henderson ISD and was part of the 2010 State Championship team. His journey has taken him through multiple leadership roles across East Texas, where he has built programs focused on teamwork, character, and community involvement.

Meeks’ leadership philosophy is built on what he calls, “five core pillars”: Ownership, Grit, Blessings, Relationships, and Process. These principles will serve as the foundation for Henderson ISD’s athletic programs, ensuring that student-athletes grow not only in competition but also in life.

“A strong athletic department builds a strong school district, and a strong school district builds a strong community,” Meeks said. “I believe in the power of athletics to shape students into better people—better sons and daughters, better students, better leaders. My goal is to create a culture where every athlete, regardless of their sport, feels supported, valued, and driven to excellence.”

Meeks is also passionate about the role the athletic department plays with other school organizations. He wants to foster relationships between student-athletes and students involved in band, art, and career and technical education programs, making the school a point of pride for the entire Henderson community.

Meeks will officially begin his new role on Tuesday and looks forward to meeting with students, coaches, and families in the coming days.
