The Henderson High School Cross-Examination team of Arianna Ayala & Ben Houston represented Henderson at the State Competition. Overall, they went 3-1 on day one and missed advancing by 0.3 speaker points.

Way to go! The Girls Powerlifting team had a top 10 finish in their first trip to state while the boys team placed 3rd overall in the regionals. Several boys placed in their weight division and Eujayvion McAlister, Devin Fields, Yacorus Porter, & Kaleb Tate qualified for state.
While rain is causing some flooding and power outages in portions of Rusk County, all HISD campuses are open. We know some staff and students live in or must drive through the areas impacted by last night’s storms and encourage all to be cautious when traveling this morning.
HISD is closely monitoring the developing weather across our area. We currently do not anticipate any major impact for our schools. Should the situation change, we will notify parents and staff. Please stay safe this evening.

WEATHER CLOSURE: All campuses of HISD will be closed Friday (Feb. 4th) due to the threat of icy road conditions early tomorrow morning. Classes will resume on Monday (Feb 7th). The closure will impact many of our athletic and extracurricular activities scheduled this weekend. By 12:30 p.m, Thursday, temperatures had already dropped below freezing in a few portions of the district and we expect that to continue overnight. While temperatures may climb above freezing tomorrow afternoon, we do not yet know if it will be enough to allow for safe travel Friday afternoon or evening. We are in contact with forecasters and local emergency management authorities to best assess the current situation. HISD’s priority remains keeping our students and staff safe and will cancel or postpone activities if travel is potentially dangerous. Watch our website (HendersonISD.org/weather) for updates.

Telephone issues...A nationwide outage experienced by our telephone provider is currently causing quality issues with phone calls to and from HISD and campuses. We are told they are working to repair it. Email and Remind are still working normally.

Henderson High School administrators confiscated a small BB gun from a student earlier this morning. The BB gun was found in a student’s backpack. All students are safe and there is no active threat on campus. The campus is not currently on lock-down and classes will continue as scheduled.
HISD remains committed to the safety of our students and staff. We would like to commend the student who made the initial report to campus staff which allowed the situation to be resolved so quickly.

Supplemental Special Education Services (SSES) Program
Senate Bill (SB 1716) passed in the 87th Legislative session expanded the current Supplemental Special Education Services (SSES) program which gives $1,500 grants to families of qualifying Special Education students. Beginning November 1, 2021, new eligibility guidelines will go into full effect, making all currently enrolled Texas public school students served by Special Education eligible!
